Biography

Lawrence Pentland began his athletic career as a soccer player, but eventually took up lacrosse and joined the Winnipeg Victorias in 1902. The following year he transferred to the Shamrock Lacrosse Club and, with them, emerged victorious at the 1903 Manitoba Provincial Championships. The team’s next stop was the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair where, after outscoring the St. Louis Amateur Athletic Association’s squad 8-2, they claimed Olympic gold. Outside of sports Pentland was an attorney and he left Winnipeg following the conclusion of his athletic career, but returned there several months prior to his death. He was inducted into the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame, along with the rest of his gold medal-winning team, in 2004.
