Franz Kugler was a member of the St. Louis Southwest Turnverein team that finished third in the tug-of-war. He also medalled in weightlifting and wrestling, making him the only man to have ever won medals in three different sports at one Olympic Games. Kugler worked as a brewer in St. Louis. Although born in Germany, he became a US citizen in 1913, and he did not speak English at the time of the 1904 Olympics. The International Olympic Committee lists him as American in 1904, as he was entered from the St. Louis Southwest Turnverein.
