Jim Deegan started playing hockey as a youngster, and at the age of 15 was in the Maidstone Hockey Club first XI. After attending a local technical college, he left to join the Royal Air Force (RAF) where he enjoyed a long career as a senior technician. He continued playing hockey for the RAF but also played squash, and became the RAF Champion.
Deegan made his England international hockey début in 1961 and went to the Tokyo Olympics as a member of the Great Britain team. That same year he captained the RAF team that retained the Inter-Services title. Regarded as one if the best left-half backs in Britain at the time, Deegan played club hockey for Hampstead and Surbiton and in 1968 went to his second Olympics as vice-captain of the GB team.
