Biography

In 1968 the East German hockey (field) team qualified for the Mexico City Olympics, with Dieter Klauß from SC Leipzig playing in that tournament. East and West Germany played their only international match in a preliminary round, with West Germany winning 3-2. East Germany finished a disappointing 11th, which caused East Germany to drastically reduce financial support for field hockey.

In 1969 Klauß helped Leipzig win the East German Championship. Klauß set a German record with 139 international caps. His wife Petra and their children Ines and Guido also became hockey players. Klauß later became a coach and helped BSG Empor Leipzig-Lindenau win East German championships as a player-coach.
