Biography

Fazalur Rehman was a Pakistani hockey player who won a World Cup gold medal and a silver medal at the Olympics. Born in Abbottabad, he attended the local high school where he played hockey for the school team. Rehman then worked for Mardan Sugar Mills, a sugar refinery company, also playing for their hockey team. He played domestic hockey for the Pakistan International Airlines team from 1966 to 1975.

Rehman made his international début for Pakistan in 1965 on a tour to Indonesia where they played against Malaysia. The following year he played for Pakistan in the 12 Nations hockey tournament in Hamburg, in a home series against West Germany, and in a three-match tour of Kenya. At the end of 1966 he played at the Asian Games with Pakistan losing to rivals India in the final.

Rehman was selected as part of Pakistan’s team for the 1968 Mexico City Olympics where Pakistan won gold but Rehman did not play in any matches. At the 1970 Asian Games, in a repeat of the final from four years earlier, Pakistan went on to beat India to win the gold medal. In 1971 he was part of the national team for the inaugural edition of the Hockey World Cup, which Pakistan won. The following year he was part of the team that won the silver medal at the 1972 München Olympics after losing to West Germany in the tournament’s final.
