Biography

Gulraiz Akhtar played left halfback in hockey for Pakistan at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics, helping them win a gold medal. He also played on the Pakistani gold medalists at the 1970 Asian Games. He was taught by Muhammad Nasib, his father’s younger brother, who had been on the 1956 Pakistani Olympic hockey team.

Akhtar played for Gordon College and then the Army 501 team, joining the Customs side in 1966. He earned his first international cap that year at the Hamburg International Festival. Akhtar helped Customs win their first national title in 1969, and they repeated in 1970-71, the first Pakistani squad to win three consecutive national championships.
