Biography

Fencer Josef Wanetschek participated in the 1960 Rome and the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. With the Austrian sabre team, he was eliminated in the pool stage. Individually, he reached the second round but was then also eliminated.

Wanetschek was a professional soldier in the Austrian Armed Forces. He acted as an instruction officer and refined the hand-to-hand combat training with new karate techniques. From 1966-67 he was sent to the special forces in the United States.

Later he was involved in the development of regulations, training guidelines, and operational principles for the hunting command. From 1979-85 he was commander of the Special Operations Staff, and from 1983-84 commander of army sports and the close combat school. From 1993-94 he became brigade commander of the 2nd Jäger Brigade.
