Biography

The 1956 Olympics were the best international tournament for Wäinö Korhonen, as he won bronzes in both the individual and team competitions. His other international medals were silvers at the 1957 and 1956 and bronze at the 1958 World Championships, all three coming in team competition. His best individual finish at the World Championships was fourth in 1957. Domestically Korhonen was Finnish champion twice in 1954-55, winning silvers in 1957 and 1962 and bronzes in 1951, 1959, 1961, 1964 and 1967. Korhonen also won Finnish championships medals in fencing, swimming and water polo and was selected as the best Finnish modern pentathlete of the year in 1954, 1957 and 1962.
