The son of a barrister, Arthur Everitt was educated at Eton and then New College, Oxford. During his time at university he became an excellent rower, but did not manage to win a Blue. After joining the London Rowing Club in 1895, however, he was bow in the four that won the Wyfold Challenge Cup at Henley that year. Everitt was also an excellent sculler and took part in the university championship and, also in 1895, became the first non-Dutch winner of the Netherlands Sculling Championship.
Everitt followed in his father’s footsteps and was called to the Bar at Lincoln’s Inn in 1896. He was also developing his skills as a fencer and in 1909 reached the semi-final of the British Épée Championship, and in 1912 won a silver medal as part of the British épée team at the Stockholm Olympics. Everitt was a major in the Princess Charlotte of Wales’s (Royal Berkshire) Regiment during World War I.
