Biography

Having won the 1948 British foil title, Arthur Smith, of the London Fencing Cub, then won the Amateur Fencing Association’s international Coronation Cup. He went on to compete at the London Olympics, where he competed in the individual and team foil. His best finish was joint fifth in the team event, after Great Britain finished third in their semi-final pool. Smith could not retain his national title in 1949, finishing second to René Paul.
