Biography

Fencer Rafael Nickel won the gold medal at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics with the West German épée team. He was subsequently awarded the Silver Bay Leaf, Germany’s highest sports award. The previous year he was a member of the silver medal-winning team at the World Championships. In 1983, Nickel won his only German national individual title. He studied veterinary medicine and owned a practice at Norderstedt.
