Biography

Shinichi Maki attended Keio University and became a member of the Keio Fencing Club founded by Goro Hiranuma, a student of Keio University in 1935. At that time, there were only three members: Goro Hiranuma, Shinichi Maki, and Masayuki Sano.

In 1936, he created the Great Japan Fencing Association and aimed for the 1940 Tokyo Olympics, but the Tokyo Olympics were canceled due to the outbreak of World War II. After the war, in 1946, with the permission of the American garrison, he created the Japan Fencing Association and Shinichi Maki also became an executive of the association.

After that, Shinichi Maki got a job at a company called Sanishi Advanced Refractory Industry. When he went to watch the 1952 Helsinki Olympics, he applied successfully to participate in all three of the individual events and his application was accepted. This was Japan’s first participation in an Olympic fencing competition.

After that, not much is known about him but it is thought that he became the director of the Doshisha University fencing club, coached Kazuhiko Tabuchi and others, became the president of the Kyoto Fencing Association, and became the center of the popularization of fencing in Kansai and western Japan. The “Makikai Junior Fencing Championship” is named after him and held annually in Kyoto.
