From the mid-to-late 1950s Güney Ülmen played basketball for Modaspor in Istanbul. With the side Ülmen won three Turkish championships (1954, 1955, 1958) and the Istanbul Basketball League (1958–59). In 1952 he was named in the Turkish squad for the basketball tournament at the Helsinki Olympics although he did not play in any matches. Three years later he did represent the national team when they competed at the 1955 Mediterranean Games. Ülmen retired from playing in 1959 and was appointed as the manager of Modaspor.
