Biography

Helge Werner attended high school from 1894-1901. In 1905, he joined the Västmanland Regiment in Västerås as a second lieutenant and was promoted to lieutenant in 1908. His highest rank in the army was a major in the reserve since 1918.

At the 1912 Olympic Games in Stockholm, Werner competed in individual and team events with the sabre. From 1913-15, Werner pursued musical studies in Italy and had an engagement as an opera singer in the German town of Elberfeld (now part of Wuppertal). After his return to Sweden, he started creating interior designs in Stockholm, where he founded the company AB Arkitektkontoret in 1925. He was commissioned to renovate Häringe Palace south of Stockholm and to design furniture and other decorative elements, of which some tapestry still survived. Some of his cabinets can still be seen in various local museums. In his later years, he worked for Råsunda Förstads AB in Solna.

Throughout his life, Werner also painted in oil and watercolours. He was made a Knight of the Order of the Sword and of the Order of Vasa. His older brother was the well-known Swedish painter Hilding Werner (1880-1944).

In 1911, he married Annie Briquetta Granström. They had two daughters and one son.
