Biography

Peter Schifrin fenced for San Jose State University, where he was a four-time All-American and won the 1982 NCAA épée title. Schifrin fenced at the World Juniors from 1976-78. He was a member of the 1979 Pan American Games team, competed at the 1979 and 1981 Universiade, and won a silver medal at the 1981 Maccabiah Games.

Schifrin later earned a masters’ in fine arts (MFA) degree from Boston University and became a poet and artist. He trained in figurative and portrait sculpture, and has had multiple commissioned works in California. He designed and executed the bronze firefighter in San Ramon, the bronze “Wounded Man” for San Mateo’s Performing Arts Center, and a set of bronze coyotes for downtown San Jose. Schifrin also created “Wings,” a series of three sculptures installed on Martha’s Vineyard. He also contributed the sculpture “Olympus Within,” which is based on Al Oerter, that sits at the entrance to the US Olympic and Paralympic Musuem. Schifrin frequently worked with another sculptor, David Duskin, and together they created “J-Line,” which was commissioned by another fencing Olympian, Stephen Trevor, a private equity manager. Schifrin also teaches at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco.
