Biography

Jack Collett fought as an unattached wrestler for several years before joining the London Amateur Wrestling Society in 1906. He later opened his own gymnasium in Bermondsey and coached many London wrestlers. During his own wrestling career, most of Collett´s opponents were against local London-area fighters, including the double Olympic medallist George de Relwyskow. Collett was prevented from enjoying his greatest moment when he lost the lightweight freestyle final to de Relwyskow in the German Gymnastic Society´s annual competition in 1907. That same year Collett finished joint third in the lightweight division at the Cumberland and Westmorland National Championships.

In 1908 Collett was again thwarted by de Relwyskow in his attempt to win the national freestyle title when beaten in the semi-final. Nevertheless, Collett was selected for that year´s London Olympics, but was a non-starter in the lightweight division won by … de Relwyskow.
