Biography

Freestyle featherweight wrestler Arthur Holloway won the coveted German Gymnasium Society´s title in 1903 (held over from 1902) when he beat Hammersmith´s Charles Sprenger, brother of the Olympian Harry Sprenger, in the final. Holloway won the title again in 1904 and the following year beat fellow Olympian William Shepherd to win the Northampton Institute Gymnasium title. Also in 1905, Holloway came the closest to winning a national title when he was forced to retire in the featherweight final against Hammersmith´s Percy Slim.

One of the best fighters in his weight division at the time, Holloway went into the 1908 London Olympics with a victory in the Northampton Institute tournament after beating H. Allsopp of the home club in the final. Holloway was a non-starter at the London Games, however, and his Northampton win was his last major victory for five years when, in 1913, he won both the Surrey Amateur title and German Gymnasium titles. The following year he collected another Northampton Institute title when he beat A. Saxby of Hammersmith in the final and shortly afterwards beat Saxby again to win the Middlesex amateur title.
