Biography

Football midfielder Josef Walter played with the Austrian national team at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics. The team lost its quarter-final 3-1 to defending champions Sweden. Domestically, he played with Wiener (Vienna) SC (until 1947) and then with 1. FC Wien (Vienna). In 1955 he moved to 1. FC Simmering for his final active season.

Walter became a car dealer by profession. In 1959 he became vice-president of FK Austria Wien (Vienna). He was a leading figure in building up professional structures in Austrian football. In 1964, he was briefly team manager of the national team. Later he was also a leading figure in the introduction of tricot sponsoring in Austria.
