One of four Scots in the 1960 British Olympic team, Bill Neil was a defender and played in just one match, the 2-2 draw with Italy in Roma. Bill joined Airdrieonians from Airdrie Academy in 1956 and played 49 League games for them before moving to Queen’s Park in 1960 and spent 10 seasons with the famous amateur club and appeared in a further 375 Scottish League games. He later became club captain before retiring in 1970, when he joined the club committee. Neil won 14 Scottish amateur caps and was also involved in the Great Britain squad in the qualifying competition for the 1964 Olympics, although they never qualified. He never turned professional because he had a career with the Royal Bank of Scotland, who he joined after leaving school and rose to become a respected bank inspector. Neil was also a good golfer, and was a former captain of Whitecraigs Golf Club, one of the leading clubs in the West of Scotland.
