Roy Sleap

Londoner Roy Sleap went to the Edmonton County School at the age of 12 and many famous people have also attended the same school, notably MP Norman Tebbitt, actors Ray Winstone and Larry Lamb and athlete Kris Akabusi. Sleap was a tough-tackling wing-half or full-back, who occasionally played up front, and went on to win 16 England Amateur caps between 1959 and 1968. An amateur with Barnet he was on the losing side when beaten by Crook Town in the 1959 Amateur Cup final and at the Roma Olympics a year later he played in the opening two games against Brazil and Italy. Shortly after the Games he moved to Hendon for one season and then had a couple of seasons with Enfield before a return to Hendon which saw him stay another 51/2 seasons. He appeared in consecutive Amateur Cup finals, winning against Whitby Town in 1965 but Hendon lost to Wealdstone the following year. In his final season at Hendon he captained the Great Britain team in their qualifying matches for the 1968 Olympics against West Germany and Spain. After 287 appearances for Hendon he finally left the club in November 1968 following a clash of personalities with the team manager. He then joined Slough Town but surprisingly returned to Hendon the following season but played just one game before quickly returning to Slough. He moved Guildford City in 1970 and retired as a player in 1973 when he went back to Slough as manager.
