Biography

Tommy Stewart was the only non-Englishman in the Great Britain team that suffered the embarrassing 5-3 extra-time defeat by Luxembourg at the 1952 Olympics. Four months earlier Stewart had captained the Scotland amateur team that beat England 2-1 in the first amateur international at Wembley. A member of Queen’s Park at the time, he previously had brief spells with the Essex club Romford and also the top north-east club Bishop Auckland. Stewart worked in advertising for a Newcastle-upon-Tyne soap manufacturer, and after the Olympics returned to Bishop Auckland and played in three consecutive Amateur Cup finals at left-back for them. They were beaten by Crook Town in a second replay in 1954, beat Hendon 2-0 in 1955 and in 1956 they beat Corinthian Casuals 4-1 in a replayed final at Middlesbrough. Stewart was the Bishop Auckland captain that day and also scored a rare goal, Bishop’s fourth in the dying seconds
