Forward Andy Brehme was on the West German football team that lost their quarter-final against Yugoslavia 5-2, and finished fifth at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. He won 86 full international caps and scored eight goals. He also played with the Olympic team 10 times and scored two goals. Brehme participated in the FIFA World Cups of 1986, 1990, and 1994. His greatest moment came in 1990 when he scored the only goal of the game from the penalty spot five minutes from time against Argentina. As a result, the team and all players were awarded the Silver Bay Leaf, Germany’s highest sports award. Four years earlier, with Brehme on the squad, Germany lost the final 3-2 to Argentina. In 1992, he also lost the final at the European Championships, beaten 2-0 by Denmark. Brehme was a member of the All-Star-Teams at the 1990 World Cup and the 1992 Europeans.

Domestically, Brehme played with 1. FC Saarbrücken (1980-81), 1. FC Kaiserslautern (1981-86 and 1993-98), and FC Bayern München (1986-88), helping Kaiserslautern to win the German Cup in 1996 and the German Championship in 1998. He also won the national title with Bayern München in 1987. In total, he played 369 Bundesliga matches and scored 53 goals. From 1988-92 he played with Inter Milano in Italy, and then one season with Real Zaragoza in Spain. With Milano he won the Italian Championship in 1989 and the UEFA Cup in 1991.

After his active career Brehme became a coach in 1999 and sports manager at 1. FC Kaiserslautern from 2000-02. He then worked with SpVgg Unterhaching and VfB Stuttgart until 2006. In 1989 he was named Football player of the Year in Italy, and in 2018 became a member of the German Football Hall of Fame.
