Defender Gé Fortgens played for various youth teams in Amsterdam before he joined Ajax in 1906. He played 52 league matches for the club scoring one goal until 1915. He became the first Ajax player ever called up to the Dutch national team in 1911. After Ajax’ relegation he represented UVV Utrecht (1915-17) and later HFC Haarlem (1917-22).
Within the short period between 1911 and 1912 Fortgens was on the Dutch national team, eventually totalling 8 caps. At the 1912 Olympics in Stockholm he played two matches, against Austria in the quarter-final (won 3-1) and against Denmark in the semi-final (lost 4-1). The Netherlands eventually won bronze.
Fortgens owned a jeweller’s store in Haarlem. in 1919 he married Tieka Kuijl with whom he had three sons and two daughters.
