Biography

Sergey Filippov came from a merchant’s family and four of the five sons played football. His brother Pyotr, for instance, was a player and coach of Zenit St. Petersburg. Sergey graduated from the German school in St. Petersburg in 1910. He started his football career with the local club Kolomagyi and stayed with the club and its successors as a left winger for 19 years: Kolomyagi (1909-23), Leningradsky Uyezd (1924), RKS Spartak Petrogradsky B (1925), Vasileostrovsky District (1926), and Lenin Stadium (1927). With St. Petersburg, he won the championship of the Russian Empire in 1912 and placed second in 1913. With his respective teams he won the championship of the St. Petersburg/Leningrad district five times (1916, 1917, 1918, 1920, 1927) and the cup four times each (1915, 1919, 1920, 1923). With Kolomyagi, he won the Tosmen Cup determining the best Russian club team in 1919 and 1923.

In 1911, he made his début with the national team in an unofficial match against England in which Russia was defeated 11-0. At the 1912 Olympic Games, he played both matches of the Russian team, his last appearances with the national team.

After the revolution, he worked as an engineer at the S. M. Kirov Spinning and Thread Factory. He died as a civilian during the siege of Leningrad in July 1943.
