Biography

Czechoslovak footballer defender Jiří Večerek made 165 appearances for Baník Ostrava from 1963 to 1972. While Večerek only scored eight goals during his club career his first goal came on his début in the 20th minute of Baník’s match against Spartak Praha Sokolovo. At the 1968 Mexico City Olympics Večerek was part of the Czechoslovakia team with him being on the scoresheet in their 8–0 win against Thailand. It was Czechoslovakia’s only win at the 1968 Games with the team finishing in joint-ninth place. In October 1970 Večerek played in two international matches, the first a UEFA Cup match against Finland, and the second a friendly match against Poland, with both matches ending in draws.
