Biography

Charlie Colombo played soccer for the US national team from 1948-52, appearing in both the 1948 and 1952 Olympics, and playing for the US team at the 1950 World Cup, when they famously upset England, 1-0. Colombo played club football for St. Louis Simpkins-Ford, helping them win the National Challenge Cup in 1948 and 1950. He was known for always wearing gloves while playing, despite the weather, and as a result, was called “Gloves.” Colombo later coached St. Louis Ambrose. He is a member of the US Soccer Hall of Fame.
