Biography

Maxi Gnauck was voted 1980 Sportswoman of the Year in the former GDR. Between 1979 and 1985 she won six World and five European Championships. At the 1980 Moscow Games Gnauck won the gold medal for her performance on the uneven bars, a silver one in the individual all-around and three additional bronzes. In 2000 she was the first German woman inducted into the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame. Later she went into coaching, first in South Africa, then from 1993-2004 in Norderstedt, Germany, and eventually from 2005-11 together with her former teammate Roland Brückner in Switzerland.
