Biography

Betty Okino was born in Uganda to a Ugandan father and Romanian mother, but moved to Illinois in the United States with her mother. Betty started out as a dancer, but quickly progressed in gymnastics and moved to Houston to train with Bela and Marta Karolyi. She fought through injuries that caused her to miss the 1991 and 1992 nationals to make the 1991 World Championship and 1992 US Olympic team. After the Olympics the injuries caused her to retire and she attended the University of Oklahoma, where she majored in broadcast journalism.

Okino later did some coaching and participated in gymnastics shows and exhibitions. She also began performing at Sea World and acted in television shows, did commercials, and appeared in films on the Disney Channel.
