Biography

Prior to turning to basketball, Theodor “Torry” Schober played tennis, handball and football in his youth. He was born in Ostrava and moved to Heidelberg in West Germany as a refugee. He was a German Champion in 1948, 1951-53 with TB Heidelberg. In 1951, 1953 and 1955 he participated at the European Championships with the German national team. In 1951, he was awarded the Silver Bay Leaf, Germany`s highest sports award.

After his active career Schober turned to coaching with USC Heidelberg (1963-65), USC Mainz (1965-71), the German national team (1971-72, including the München Olympics), BSC Saturn Köln (1980-82) and Allgemeiner Deutsche Hochschulsportverband (1978-91). Schober also acted as a referee in 149 international matches, including the 1968 Mexico City Olympics.

During his first years in Germany, Schober worked as a shoe-shiner and waiter, prior to studying to become a sports teacher.
