Biography

Albert Edward Hawkins was the 1908 British amateur lightweight wrestling champion in the Cumberland and Westmorland style, and the runner-up in the previous year, as a member of the London Amateur Wrestling Society. A longtime member and honorary secretary of the Barnet YMCA, Hawkins won the lightweight title of that organization in 1907 and was a teacher and referee there in the late 1900s. He participated in the lightweight class of the Greco-Roman event in the 1908 Olympics, losing in the second round to Ödön Radvány of Hungary.

A native of Newport, Wales, Hawkins was an engineering smith by profession and resided in Barnet for many years before returning to Wales before his death in 1961.
