Biography

The son of a Yorkshire-born draper, Gilbert Raynes was a member of the gymnastics section of the famous Northampton Institute in London. Raynes’ only British title came in 1928 when he was a member of the Northampton squad that won the national team title for the fourth consecutive year. As a result, Raynes was selected for the Amsterdam Olympics that year, but it was a major disappointment as Britain finished last in the team event and Raynes was 82nd (out of 88) in the individual all-around competition.
