Biography

Birgit Heinecke was on the bronze medal winning squad of the East German handball team at the 1980 Moskva Olympics. She also won a gold at the 1978 Worlds. She played 57 international matches with the GDR national team and scored 55 goals.

Domestically, Heinecke played with SC Magdeburg and helped them win the 1981 East German Championship. Heinecke studied pedagogics and later worked with her home club SC Magdeburg in several departments. After re-unification she became a journalist with the newspapers Magdeburger Volksstimme, Rostocker Ostsee-Zeitung, and Leipziger Volkszeitung.
