Biography

Juan Ferrer won multiple international medals as a judoka competing for Cuba. In addition to his 1980 Olympic silver medal, Ferrer won a bronze (1979) and silver (1983) medal at the Pan American Games as a light-middleweight. He won two gold medals at the Central American and Caribbean Games, in 1974 and 1978, and was Pan American Champion in 1974 and 1979. Ferrer was a member of the Youth Communist League and the Communist Party of Cuba and was awarded the Order of Sporting Merit by the State Council. With a degree in physical culture and sports, he later coached the Cuban national judo team.
