Biography

A light-heavyweight, Tom Griffin was the North-West London Champion three years in succession, 1934-36. Those wins gained him entry to the ABA Championships but he never won a title. He pushed the defending champion George Brennan all the way on his début in 1934, before Brennan went on to retain his title. Griffin also made his England début in 1934. The nearest he came to an ABA title was in 1935 when he lost to the future Olympic champion, Frenchman Roger Michelot, after a split decision in the semi-final. That year, Griffin also represented Great Britain in a Golden Gloves match against the USA at the New York Yankee Stadium. He was last to fight, and rounded off a memorable 8-3 win for the British team by beating Dom Scappatura with a TKO. In the return match at Wembley the following year, Griffin narrowly lost on points to George Brothers.
