East German lightweight boxer Peter Rieger lost his first bout at the 1968 Mexico Olympics when beaten by the Yugoslavian Zvonko Vujin on a narrow 2-3 decision. Vujin went on to win the bronze medal. In that same year, Rieger won the East German light-welterweight title. However, over the next few years, he remained in the shadow of his team-mate Peter Tiepold, who he could not beat. Rieger later became a well-known East Germany boxing coach.
