Biography

George McCauley was one of three children born to Alexander and Margaret (Friar) McCauley; his father was a member of the Toronto Fire Department, and his mother a native of Berwick-upon-Tweed, Northumberland, England. An active member of Toronto’s Argonaut Rowing Club, having started in the sport as a youth, McCauley was a member of the eights team that represented Canada at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics and fell just short of the finals, having been eliminated after losing to Germany in the semi-final repêchage.

He continued competing in rowing competitions throughout the 1950s. McCauley later continued to serve in various capacities with the Argonaut Rowing Club, including as manager in the late 1960s, as well as secretary and historian in later years. Outside of sports, he followed in his father’s footsteps and was a firefighter by profession, residing in Etobicoke with his wife, Mary and their three children.
