Biography

David Maxwell was born in the northern Scottish fishing port of Nairn in 1951. In the late 1960s Maxwell attended Eton College and won silver in the eight at the 1968 FISA World Youth Championships. The following year he won silver in the coxless fours at the 1969 championships and won the Visitors’ Challenge Cup at the Henley Royal Regatta. Whilst studying sciences at Cambridge University he was part of the winning Boat Race crew in 1971 and 1972. Along with Mike Hart and Alan Inns, Maxwell also won the coxed pairs title at the 1972 National Rowing Championships. The same team then went on to finish eighth in the coxed pairs at the 1972 München Olympics. After switching back to the eight he won silver in the event at the 1974 World Rowing Championships and at the 1976 Montréal Olympics.
