Alan Watson attended Latymer Upper School on the bank of the River Thames in London and became a very good oarsman. After going to London University he rowed with their eights, in addition to rowing fours. Watson eventually became London University rowing coach and, upon returning to Latymer as a woodwork master, he also coached their rowing team. In 1964 he was appointed to the Amateur Rowing Association (ARA) national coaching team.
In 1956 Watson was in the Great Britain eight at the European Championships in Bled before going to Melbourne for the Olympics. Unfortunately they were eliminated in the first round repêchage. His finest moment on the international stage was at the 1954 British Empire and Commonwealth Games at Vancouver when he won a silver medal with the England eight.
