Biography

East German rower Uwe Gasch could not participate due to the Soviet-led boycott at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. He then partnered Carl Ertel in the coxless pairs and finished fifth at the 1988 Seoul Olympics. He won a silver (1983) and two bronze medals (1981 and 1985) at World Championships in different classes.

Domestically, Gasch won six national titles, in 1981 and 1984 with the coxless fours, in 1983 with the eights, in 1985 and 1987 with the coxed pairs, and in 1987 with the coxless pairs. He was briefly married to his teammate Marita Sandig. Gasch later worked with the Autocenter Leipzig-Halle as their CEO, and became president of Stadtsportbund Leipzig.
