Biography

Peter Thiede was a German rowing cox who participated in four consecutive Olympic Games. At Barcelona in 1992 he partnered Michael Peter and Thomas Woddow in the coxed pairs, but finished an unfortunate fourth. From 1996-2004 he was the cox in the German eights, winning the silver medal in 1996, and then finishing fourth and eighth respectively at the next two Games. He was awarded Germany’s highest sports award, the Silver Bay Leaf, for the 1996 silver medal performance.

At World Championships Thiede won three gold medals (1993, 1995, 2006), five silvers (1987, 1989, 1998, 2002, 2007) and three bronzes (1990, 2001, 2005) with the eights. He was on the German eights from 1993-2008 and on the former GDR eights from 1987-90, except 1988.

Thiede won 15 national titles and later turned to coaching. He took over the U23 men’s eights at the Regional Olympic Center in Dortmund. By profession, he became a soldier with the Deutsche Bundeswehr.
