The 1944 Irish flyweight champion, Ulsterman Billy Barnes made his first appearance on an international stage during the 1947 European Amateur Boxing Championships in Dublin. Unfortunately, Barnes was disqualified in the first round of his bout with Chris van Oosten of the Netherlands.
The following year, Barnes won the Irish flyweight title and was a regular in the Irish team, having taken part in the international matches against Wales, Scotland, and Spain. Selected for the 1948 London Olympics, Barnes received a bye in the opening round before coming up against the Czechoslovakian champion František Majdloch. Barnes lost on points as the Czech reached the semi-final.
Barnes turned professional the year after the Olympics and between 1949-51 won seven of his 11 bouts. After nearly seven years in retirement, he beat Billy Kane in a comeback fight in 1957 before eventually retiring permanently. Barnes became chairman of the Irish Ex-Boxers’ Association until stepping down in 1989.
