Biography

In the late 1960s and early 1970s Aleksandr Timoshinin was one of the best rowers in the world, which culminated with him winning two Olympic gold medals. Timoshinin competed in the double sculls event, with him becoming a five-time champion of the USSR (1968–70, 1972, 1975). His first national title earned him a spot on the Soviet team for the 1968 Mexico City Olympics, which saw him and compatriot Anatoly Sass winning gold. Four years later Timoshinin partnered Gennady Korshikov at the 1972 München Olympics with the pair winning another gold in the double sculls for the Soviet Union. The following year the pair won silver at the 1973 European Rowing Championships in Moskva.

After his rowing career Timoshinin moved into coaching, first with the Navy Central Sports Club, before becoming the senior coach of the USSR team. Several members of his family also competed at the Olympics, including his wife Nataliya, son Vladimir, and granddaughter Yuliya, who all participated in diving.
