Biography

Steve Peterson rowed lightweight double sculls at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. He also competed in lightweight crews at the 1989-92 and 1995 World Championships, winning a gold medal in lightweight double sculls in 1990.

Peterson became a coach even while he was competing. A graduate of the University of Rhode Island, he was an assistant coach at Rhode Island from 1986-87 and was head coach from 1991-92. He then took the head coaching job for lightweight crew at Rutgers, serving there from 1992-95. Peterson served as women’s head coach at George Washington University from 1996-2003 and became head women’s coach at Indiana University in 2003.

Peterson also coached US national teams internationally. He was women’s lightweight coach at the 1999 Pan American Games, and served as a women’s lightweight coach at the 2000, 2001, and 2003 World Championships. Peterson is a member of the US Rowing Hall of Fame, inducted in 1999, and a member of the University of Rhode Island Athletic Hall of Fame.
