Biography

Enzo Petriglia was a prominent Italian amateur boxer who fought over 140 bouts and was Italian champion in Genova in 1966. He won a bronze medal at the 1967 Mediterranean Games and silver in the Mexico City Pre-Olympic tournament of the same year. He was considered the top Italian prospect for the Olympic Games in 1968. At the Games Petriglia defeated two dangerous African boxers and then beat the Argentine Pedro Aguero on a split decision, then lost his quarter-final bout to Polish Józef Grudzien, the defending gold medallist. After turning pro, Petriglia had an excellent start with 13 consecutive wins between December 1968 and January 1970, before a defeat by TKO in Roma against Britain’s Pat McCormack. He rebounded to become the Italian champion for the first time in Rapallo on 23 June 1971, knocking out Carmelo Coscia. In September 1972 Petriglia attempted to win the European title but had to yield in Round 11 to the veteran Antonio Puddu. In his next fight he dropped the Italian title to Enzo Pizzoni by decision. Petriglia quit boxing after only five years as a professional and 31 matches, finishing with a career record of 23 wins, 5 losses, and 3 draws.
