Biography

Cuban skeet shooter Roberto Castrillo began his career in 1966, making his international début one year later. Over the next 20 years Castrillo won more than a dozen medals at major competitions, including the Olympics and Pan American Games. His first success came at the latter, winning silver in the team event at the 1967 Games in Winnipeg. He won another team silver in 1971 in Cali, before winning a team gold and an individual silver at the 1975 Pan American Games in Mexico. Yet another team bronze came at the 1979 Games in San Juan, with Castrillo taking home silver in both the individual and team events in 1983 in Caracas.

Castrillo had an even more impressive record at the Central American and Caribbean Games, where he won eight golds, including doing the individual and team double on three occasions (1970, 1974, 1978). At the 1982 Games he won a team gold and an individual silver, with his final medal coming in 1986, when he won another gold in the team event.

A three-time Olympian, Castrillo placed fifth at the 1972 München Games, finishing only one point off the medals. Four years later, however, he had a rather disappointing performance when he placed 30th at the Montréal Games. In 1980 in Moskva, he more than made up for his previous result at the Games by winning bronze, becoming the first Cuban to win an Olympic medal in shooting. Following his retirement Castrillo worked as a coach and an international referee.
