No favorite existed as five different shooters held the world record with a 200 possible, and the last several major championships had been spread among various competitors. Czechoslovakian Jozef Panaček led early with 198. Dutchman Eric Swinkels came to his last round needing 25 for the gold medal, but dropped a low eight bird. Tying at 198, Panaček won the shoot-off 50-49. Swinkels had been third at both the 1975 European and World Championships.
