Toivonen founded the radium-hydro sanatorium Viiksanlahden at the shore of Lake Suvanto in the former Finnish town of Sakkola. The town has been part of Russia since 1944 under the name of Gromovo. Toivonen bequeathed the sanatorium to the Finnish Gymnastic and Sports Association – SVUL.
