Although born James Frederick Chandler, he was known as John Chandler at the 1948 Olympics. A member of the Twickenham Rifle Club, he also competed in both the 1947 World Championships in Stockholm, when he won a team bronze, and at Oslo four years later. A chemist by profession, Chandler served in the RAF during World War II, and saw action in Italy.
