Biography

Sports shooter Thomas Pfeffer specialized in the running target events at the Olympics. He represented East Germany, and finished an unfortunate fourth at the 1976 Montréal Games, coming in with the same score as Poland’s Jerzy Greszkiewicz, but lost out on a medal by having four targets less in the final round. Four years later at Moskva, he won the silver medal, losing the shoot-off against the Soviet Union’s Igor Sokolov 97-95. Both shot a new world record of 589 rings. At Seoul in 1988, Pfeffer was seventh.

In 1977, Pfeffer won the East German national and European titles. In 1978 he defended his European title, and in 1979 he won a bronze medal. In 1981, he added a European silver medal, again behind Sokolov, but Pfeffer did win the World Championships. In 1986, he added a World team bronze.

By profession, Pfeffer became a hunting weapon mechanic. He was also engaged as a local politician in his hometown Suhl. After re-unification, Pfeffer was named chief national coach for running target shooting.
