The favorite was the Colombian, Helmut Bellingrodt, who was silver medalist in 1972, was the world record holder, had won the 1974 World Championships and was second in 1975. But he placed only fourth on the slow run, and struggled further on the fast run, eventually placing only sixth. The gold medal went to Soviet Aleksandr Gazov, who broke Bellingrodt’s world record with a 579, to defeat his teammate Aleksandr Kedyarov, who fired 576.
